X1 versus GLA

With the introduction of its second generation X1, BMW now has some competition from Mercedes-Benz.

US buyers have only one engine option for both compact luxury SUV, a 2-liter inline-4. But Mercedes comes with an entry-level rear wheel drive system, which cuts the price of GLA 4MATIC by $2k.

On the paper BMW produces 20 more horsepower than the Benz - while the torque is the same for both - which accelerates the SUV from zero to 60 mpg in impressing 6.3 seconds. That's about a second faster than GLA 4MATIC.

But size is where X1 really trump GLA. Despite having a longer wheelbase, GLA's lower roof line and rear end design have compromised the interior room. That results in having less trunk space and passenger room when compared to X1's.
