Polestar 4: An Electric Performance SUV Coupé with a New Approach to Design
Polestar has unveiled its latest offering, the Polestar 4, an electric performance SUV coupé. The new model, positioned between the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3, aims to combine the aerodynamics of a coupé and the spaciousness of an SUV. As the fastest Polestar production car to date, the Polestar 4 brings design cues from the brand's concept cars into a new breed of SUV coupé.
Design
Following the design-driven philosophy of the brand, the Polestar 4 incorporates key design elements from the Polestar Precept concept car. The most notable design change is the elimination of the rear window, which creates an immersive rear occupant experience. Aerodynamic efficiency is achieved through features such as a low nose, retractable door handles, flush glazing with frameless windows, and airflow optimization around the rear light bar.
Sustainability
Emphasizing sustainability, the Polestar 4 incorporates more circular and low-carbon materials, replacing traditional solutions. The interior materials follow a mono-material approach, making them easier to recycle. The upholstery consists of 100% recycled PET, bio-attributed MicroTech vinyl, and animal welfare-secured Nappa leather.
Performance
The Polestar 4 is the brand's fastest production car, with a 0-100 km/h time of just 3.8 seconds and a maximum power output of 400 kW (544 hp). The vehicle offers both dual- and single motor versions, with single-motor versions featuring rear-wheel drive. A 102 kWh battery is fitted to both long-range versions, with the dual-motor version offering a preliminary range target of up to 560 km WLTP.
Technology
Equipped with the latest technology, the Polestar 4 features an infotainment system powered by Android Automotive OS and a 15.4-inch landscape-oriented screen. Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play come built-in. Apple CarPlay is also included, and the vehicle supports regular over-the-air (OTA) updates for software improvements.
Safety
With a strong connection to Volvo Cars, safety is a core aspect of Polestar's DNA. The Polestar 4 features leading safety technology, including the SuperVision Advanced Driver Assistance System from Mobileye. The vehicle is equipped with twelve cameras, one radar, and twelve ultrasonic sensors as standard.
The Polestar 4 will launch first in China, with production starting in November 2023, and a full-scale launch in Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific planned for early 2024. Indicative launch pricing is from EUR 60,000/USD 60,000/GBP 55,000. While the Polestar 4 brings a fresh design approach and impressive performance figures, it remains to be seen how it will fare in the competitive electric vehicle market.
