2016 Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar: Swedish Precision Meets Refined Power
In 2016, Volvo Cars of North America embarked on a daring venture, introducing just 265 units of the S60 and V60 Polestar models into the domestic market. These carefully engineered vehicles started their transatlantic journey during the summer of the same year, with a distribution plan favoring the V60 variant at 60% while the S60 variant occupied the remaining 40%. The unique selling proposition was a meticulously redesigned S60 and V60, equipped with over 70 enhancements promising an unparalleled driving experience on any terrain.
An Enthusiast's Delight
The Polestar lineup, known for its track-inspired performance, carved out its niche among automotive connoisseurs fairly quickly. As witnessed with the 2015 models, the demand often outstripped the supply. The new offering for 2016 expanded the color palette, adding Ice White and Bright Silver to the existing Rebel Blue and Black Sapphire. This initiative was an attempt to blend the conventional Volvo aesthetics with exhilarating driving dynamics, setting the Polestar editions apart on American roads.
Powerhouse Performance
Under the hood of each Polestar model resided a potent 345 horsepower, 6-cylinder engine, capable of propelling the vehicle from a standstill to 60 MPH in a brisk 4.7 seconds (4.8 seconds for the V60). This feat was made possible through several enhancements, including a new twin-scroll turbo, an intercooler, a full-flow active exhaust, and a completely recalibrated engine management system. Additionally, the refined transmission allowed for faster gear shifts, and the Haldex all-wheel drive system provided improved traction.
A Premium Chassis Design
The powerful engine was complemented by a superior chassis design. Custom shock absorbers, developed in collaboration with long-term partner Öhlins, ensured a supercar-like suspension. Along with it, an entirely revamped brake system, boasting 6-piston Brembo brake calipers and ventilated brake discs, provided high stopping power.
Design Crafted for Performance
From the exterior to the interior, the S60 and V60 Polestar models exemplified performance-oriented design. The external aerodynamics were fine-tuned, and the Polestar-specific rims not only looked great but also increased braking endurance through optimized airflow around the brakes. The cabin, too, catered to the performance spirit with Nubuck-clad steering wheel and seats offering enhanced grip.
Polestar: A Winning Combination
Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, aptly described the Polestar models as the perfect blend of Polestar's racing experience and Volvo's knack for crafting everyday cars. This, indeed, is a symbiosis hard to achieve and harder to replicate. The list of standard features these vehicles come with - such as the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Adaptive Cruise Control, and Harman Kardon Premium Sound - further testifies to this winning combination.
Looking Ahead
The Volvo-Polestar alliance took a leap forward with Volvo's acquisition of Polestar Performance AB, fueling anticipation for the further development of Polestar-enhanced vehicles. The transition of all vehicles to the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) by the end of 2018 set the stage for the next chapter in Volvo's journey towards automotive excellence.
