2024 Toyota Urban Cruiser Concept Brings Electric SUV Designed with Suzuki

Toyota is signaling its electric future with the reveal of the 2024 Urban Cruiser Concept, an all-new battery-electric compact SUV developed in collaboration with Suzuki. This concept previews Toyota's answer to the growing competition in the electric compact SUV segment, positioning itself against rivals like the Hyundai Kona Electric, Volvo EX30, and the upcoming Kia EV3.

A Joint Venture with Suzuki

The 2024 Toyota Urban Cruiser Concept is more than just another addition to Toyota's lineup; it's a testament to the ongoing partnership between Toyota and Suzuki. Following the recent introduction of the Suzuki e Vitara, which was co-developed with Toyota, the Urban Cruiser Concept represents Toyota's iteration of this shared vision. This collaboration aims to leverage each company's strengths to produce electric vehicles that appeal to a broad audience.

Bold Design and Compact Dimensions

Embracing a robust and impactful SUV design, the Urban Cruiser Concept showcases Toyota's commitment to blending style with practicality. The exterior features a powerful lower body, a contemporary "hammerhead" front end, and muscular rear haunches accentuated by a striking rear light bar that spans the width of the vehicle. Slightly larger than the current Toyota Yaris Cross, the Urban Cruiser measures approximately 168.7 inches in length, 70.9 inches in width, and 64.6 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 106.3 inches. The compact dimensions and a tight turning radius of about 17 feet make it well-suited for urban environments.

Spacious and Flexible Interior

Inside, the Urban Cruiser Concept offers a surprisingly roomy cabin, thanks in part to its extended wheelbase. A highlight is the sliding rear seat system, allowing the interior space to be adjusted for passenger comfort or increased cargo capacity. The rear seats can recline and split-fold in a 40:20:40 configuration, providing versatility typically found in larger SUVs. The interior design emphasizes a clean and open layout, with a low horizontal instrument panel and high seating position for excellent visibility. Ambient lighting with 12 color options adds to the cabin's appeal.

Multiple Electric Powertrain Options

Toyota plans to offer the Urban Cruiser with a choice of two lithium-iron phosphate battery packs and the option of front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). The FWD models will be available with either a 49 kWh battery producing 106 kW (144 horsepower) or a 61 kWh battery generating 128 kW (174 horsepower). The AWD variant pairs the 61 kWh battery with a power output of 135 kW (184 horsepower), thanks to an additional rear motor supplying 48 kW. All versions are equipped with energy-saving heat pumps for air conditioning and feature a manually operated battery pre-heating system to enhance performance in colder climates.

Built on a New Electric Platform

The Urban Cruiser Concept is constructed on a dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform designed for strength and lightness. This new architecture integrates the high-voltage components without compromising interior space, eliminating the need for floor crossmembers. The platform's design not only improves cabin roominess but also supports enhanced driving dynamics.

Authentic SUV Capabilities

True to its SUV roots, the Urban Cruiser offers an AWD system that improves stability and traction on various surfaces. The AWD model includes features like Downhill Assist Control and Trail Mode, which help navigate challenging terrains by managing wheel spin and optimizing torque distribution. Even the FWD version benefits from a Snow Mode to reduce wheel slip on slippery roads, ensuring confidence-inspiring performance regardless of driving conditions.

Advanced Technology and Safety Features

Equipped with the latest technology, the Urban Cruiser Concept doesn't skimp on connectivity or safety. The driver benefits from a seamless integration of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch multimedia display. The infotainment system supports cloud-based navigation and smartphone integration for access to preferred apps and services. Safety is a priority, with a comprehensive suite of active safety systems including pre-collision assistance, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, and lane keep assist. A 360-degree camera system aids in maneuvering and parking, providing a clear view of the vehicle's surroundings.

Positioned Against Strong Competition

The electric compact SUV segment is heating up, and the 2024 Toyota Urban Cruiser is poised to make its mark. By offering a blend of design, versatility, and advanced technology, it sets itself up against established models like the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Volvo EX30, as well as preparing to face the forthcoming Kia EV3. Toyota's multi-path strategy in electrification, which includes hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fuel cell vehicles, is further expanded with this new BEV offering.

Embracing the Electric Future

The 2024 Toyota Urban Cruiser Concept represents more than just a new model; it signifies Toyota's commitment to a diverse electrified lineup and carbon neutrality goals. With its anticipated public debut at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show, the Urban Cruiser is set to be a significant addition to Toyota's portfolio, offering consumers an electric compact SUV that doesn't compromise on design, capability, or technology. Collaborating with Suzuki and incorporating authentic SUV features, Toyota is aiming to capture a substantial share of the rapidly growing electric vehicle market.
