The 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS: Unapologetically Racing-Inspired
It's clear from the outset that the 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS isn't pulling any punches. This high-performance sports car is fully decked out with cutting-edge technologies inspired by motorsports. With its 518 hp engine and numerous aerodynamic features, the GT3 RS is more akin to its motorsport sibling, the 911 GT3 R, than your everyday sports car.
Track-Ready Aerodynamics and Cooling
Porsche's engineering team has placed a strong emphasis on optimizing aerodynamics and cooling systems in the new 911 GT3 RS. Taking inspiration from Le Mans-winning Porsche models, they've incorporated a central radiator concept, which allows for better active aerodynamic integration. The revised aerodynamic elements and cooling system offer impressive downforce at high speeds, reaching up to 900 lbs at approximately 124 mph (200 km/h) and a whopping 1,895 lbs at 177 mph (285 km/h).
This is Porsche's first model to include a drag reduction system (DRS) which can flatten the wings to achieve lower drag and higher speeds on track straightaways. And when it comes to braking at high speeds, the airbrake function optimizes wing positions to maximize aerodynamic drag, thereby aiding deceleration.
Designed for Performance and Distinctive Aesthetics
The 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS' performance-focused design isn't just about function - it has a distinctive, purposeful look. A noteworthy feature is the swan-neck-supported rear wing, larger in all dimensions than its predecessor's, lending the car a unique silhouette. Furthermore, the GT3 RS introduces a production Porsche model with the upper edge of the rear wing rising higher than the roof for the first time.
Adjustable Track Suspension
In a further nod to track-focused functionality, the 911 GT3 RS boasts an adjustable track suspension that can be modified from inside the car. The suspension has been designed with aerodynamic efficiency in mind, featuring components with teardrop-shaped profiles to increase downforce on the front axle. Front track width has increased by 1.14 inches (29 mm), necessitating longer double-wishbone front axle links.
High-Revving Powertrain
Under the hood, the GT3 RS is powered by a 4.0-liter high-revving naturally aspirated engine, further optimized over the 911 GT3. It produces 518 hp, a slight boost over the 911 GT3's 502 hp. Paired with this engine is the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission, engineered for extreme loads during frequent track use. The GT3 RS accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 3.0 seconds and can reach a top speed of 184 mph (296 km/h).
Embracing Lightweight Construction
Porsche remains committed to lightweight construction in the GT3 RS. Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) features prominently, keeping the vehicle's weight at a mere 3,268 lbs (1,483 kg). This use of CFRP extends to the interior, where elements like the standard full bucket seats and carbon fiber trim emphasize the sporty ambiance.
Additional Weissach Package
For those looking to take the GT3 RS experience a step further, Porsche offers the Weissach package, which brings a host of enhancements including visible carbon fiber elements, CFRP components for improved driving dynamics, and precision gear changes thanks to motorsport-derived magnet technology. The Weissach package also includes forged magnesium wheels, reducing unsprung weight by 17.6 lbs (8 kg).
With an expected arrival at U.S. dealers by Spring 2023, and a starting MSRP of $223,800, the 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS is clearly aimed at enthusiasts looking for a road-legal sports car with serious track credentials.
