McLaren's Artistic Spin: The 2019 McLaren 720S Spider by MSO

At the Geneva International Motor Show, there's been a distinct buzz emanating from McLaren’s stand. The cause? The McLaren 720S Spider, showcased through the lens of McLaren Special Operations (MSO). This isn't your everyday supercar – it's a canvas for art, aerodynamics, and unbridled ambition.

The Aerodynamics Highlighted in Hue

McLaren's new Super Series convertible, the 720S Spider, has been thrust into the spotlight with a unique color scheme. Thanks to MSO's meticulous craftsmanship, the vehicle emphasizes the underlying aerodynamic intricacies. The Spider wears a harmonious blend of three metallic paints: Cerulean Blue, Burton Blue (notably seen on the McLaren 720S GT3), and Abyss Black. Termed "Coriolis", this tri-tone paint finish isn't just about visual appeal. It's an evolution of paint technologies, advancing from what was seen on the McLaren 720S Velocity by MSO two years prior. Where the Velocity boasted sporting aggression, the Spider boasts luxury and subtlety.

The Science Behind the Artistry

Darryl Scriven, the MSO Chief Designer at McLaren Automotive, comments on the Spider's aerodynamic prowess. According to him, it's a harmonious melding of art and science, where the Spider's paint design exemplifies how the car interacts with its environment. With over 260 painstaking hours dedicated to perfecting the tri-tone paint alone, MSO's commitment to crafting a masterpiece is evident. This dedication extends to individual body panels, symbolizing the car's aerodynamic efficiency as it cuts through the air. Elements like the front splitter, hood air intakes, door mirrors, and even the underside of the rear spoiler have been adorned with this meticulous paint finish, underscoring the aerodynamic sophistication of this convertible.

The Exclusivity of Details

Accentuating the tri-tone blend is the Meteorite Grey body paint – a fresh addition to the MSO Bespoke range. Add to this the 10-Spoke Super Lightweight forged wheels in an Abyss Black gloss finish, and the visuals are nothing short of stellar. The vehicle is also adorned with MSO Bespoke Burton Blue brake calipers and a range of MSO Defined features like the Gloss Carbon Fibre Tonneau Cover. Internally, the Spider reveals its true MSO colors. The interior gleams with Burton Blue Alcantara® juxtaposed against Jet Black leather. And, not to be left out, there’s a plethora of carbon fibre elements and unique MSO Bespoke detailing right down to the key fob.

A Brief Look Backward

The 720S Coupé has long been revered for its cutting-edge aerodynamic design, characterized by distinctive features like its 'eye socket' front air intakes. The Spider retains these iconic elements while introducing a one-piece retractable hard top and glazed flying buttresses. Combining lightweight design, Proactive Chassis Control II, and the 710bhp 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, the Spider has been labeled as McLaren's most accomplished convertible supercar to date.

More than Meets the Eye

Ansar Ali, the Managing Director at McLaren Special Operations, sums it up perfectly: the 2019 McLaren 720S Spider by MSO is not just a vehicle, but a testament to McLaren’s dedication to innovation, artistry, and the spirit of bespoke craftsmanship. In a world filled with supercars, the Spider – with its unique MSO touch – stands apart, marking a new chapter in the narrative of McLaren's automotive prowess.
