2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV: Embracing the Electric Future
In 2022, Chevrolet made a significant stride in its electric vehicle (EV) range, presenting the fresh Bolt EUV and a redesigned Bolt EV. Both of these all-electric models continue to underscore General Motors' commitment to a more sustainable future, punctuating its ambitious plan to introduce 30 new EV models globally by 2025. Let's delve into the particulars of these two noteworthy introductions.
Bolt EV and EUV: Siblings, not Twins
While the Bolt EV and its bigger sibling, the Bolt EUV, may share the same proven technology that positioned the Bolt as an industry-leading affordable, long-range EV, they are far from identical. Each car boasts a distinctive exterior design. The Bolt EUV, in particular, strikes a compelling SUV-like silhouette, making it an exciting proposition for those desiring a balance of practicality and sustainability.
Accessibility: A Cornerstone of Chevrolet's Electric Ambitions
Accessibility has been the linchpin in Chevrolet's EV strategy, as GM President Mark Reuss outlined in his comments on these new models. The Bolt EV has already proved influential, with global sales exceeding 100,000 units since its introduction in 2017. Impressively, three-quarters of these purchases were made by customers new to GM in the U.S., highlighting the Bolt's success in attracting a new demographic to the brand.
Charging Convenience Amplified
Arguably, one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption has been the apprehension surrounding charging infrastructure. Chevrolet has tackled this issue head-on by introducing a new Dual Level Charge Cord. This innovative solution allows customers to charge their vehicle via a standard 120-volt three-prong outlet for Level 1 charging, or a 240-volt outlet for Level 2 charging, providing up to 7.2 kilowatts of power. Additionally, for those desiring a quicker home-charging solution, Chevrolet, in partnership with Qmerit, is covering the standard installation of Level 2 charging equipment for eligible customers.
Styling and Interior Design
Distinctive styling sets the Bolt EUV and the Bolt EV apart. According to Phil Zak, Chevrolet’s executive design director, both vehicles were designed to be "bold and athletic." Unique exterior sheet metal parts and an approximate 6-inch longer length differentiate the Bolt EUV from the Bolt EV. Inside, both vehicles offer a redesigned cabin, featuring new instrument panels, vehicle controls, and seats. A 10.2-inch-diagonal infotainment color touchscreen sits at the heart of the vehicle's dashboard, presenting drivers with an intuitive interface.
A Technological Tour de Force
Advancements aren't just skin deep. The Bolt EUV makes history as the first Chevrolet vehicle to offer Super Cruise, a hands-free driver assistance system. This pioneering feature can be used on over 200,000 miles (about 320,000 kilometers) of enabled roads across the U.S. and Canada. Alongside Super Cruise, Chevy Safety Assist is standard on both models, offering a suite of advanced driver assistance technologies.
A Proven Propulsion System
The Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are powered by Chevrolet’s reliable 65-kilowatt-hour, lithium-ion battery pack. This allows the Bolt EV to achieve up to a GM-estimated 259 miles (approximately 416 kilometers) of range on a full charge. The slightly larger Bolt EUV can go for about 250 miles (approximately 402 kilometers) on a single charge. Chevrolet’s 8-year/100,000-mile limited battery system warranty underpins the reliability of this technology.
Affordable Electric Mobility
Despite all the advancements and features, Chevrolet has not lost sight of affordability. Both vehicles are priced lower than the 2021 Bolt EV. The 2022 Bolt EUV starts at $33,995, and the Bolt EV begins at $31,995, inclusive of destination freight charges. These competitive price points, coupled with state, local, or utility incentives, make both vehicles an enticing proposition for those looking to switch to electric.
With the introduction of the Bolt EUV and the refreshed Bolt EV, Chevrolet continues to pioneer in the realm of affordable and accessible electric mobility. It will be interesting to see how these two models shape the brand's journey and the broader EV landscape.
