2018 Chevrolet Tahoe RST Special Edition: A Street Performance Look with a Muscular Heart
Unveiling a new model is always exciting, but there's something special about a sports edition of a full-size SUV. The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe RST, or Rally Sport Truck, is Chevy's answer to a seemingly contradictory desire for size and power in a smooth and refined package. It's a blend that seeks to satisfy both the adventurous spirit and the practical needs of modern drivers.
Performance and Capability
The heart of this beast is a 420 horsepower, 6.2L V8 engine. This is the first time this particular powerplant has been offered in the Tahoe. Coupled with a 10-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, it's designed to deliver on both ends of the spectrum: power and efficiency. Using advanced technologies like direct injection, Active Fuel Management, and continuously variable valve timing, it aims to optimize performance and torque while maintaining efficiency under a range of operating conditions. Preliminary estimates promise a towing capacity of 8,400 pounds and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in under 6 seconds, though exact performance metrics will be released closer to launch.
Exterior Styling
Visually, the 2018 Tahoe RST takes a step away from the flashy chrome trim usually associated with high-end SUVs, in favor of a more understated yet striking street performance look. Exterior changes include a body-color grille surround and door handles; gloss-black grille and mirror caps; black roof rails, window trim, badging and Chevy bowties. The vehicle stands on exclusive 22-inch wheels wearing Bridgestone P285/45R 22 tires.
Upgrades
Optional upgrades enhance both the sound and the stopping power of the Tahoe RST. A Borla performance exhaust system can boost exhaust flow by 28 percent, translating to a gain of 7-10 horsepower at the rear wheels. To handle the increased power, an available brake package sports red Brembo six-piston, fixed aluminum calipers and larger-than-stock Duralife rotors (16.1 inches by 1.3 inches). These components not only increase thermal capacity, but they also promise reduced corrosion and quieter, less-vibrating braking.
Magnetic Ride Control
A notable addition to the RST is the Magnetic Ride Control. This active suspension technology constantly "reads" the road and adjusts the shock absorbers accordingly. With the performance calibration included in the RST Performance Package, this system is expected to deliver improved body-motion control during cornering, and a comfortable ride while cruising.
Brand Loyalty
It's worth noting that Chevrolet has long been a dominant name in the full-size SUV market. In 2016, nearly one out of every two full-size SUVs sold in the U.S. was either a Tahoe or a Suburban. With the introduction of the 2018 Tahoe RST, Chevy aims to not just maintain but build upon this strong loyalty among its owners.
While the 2018 Tahoe RST seeks to bridge the gap between power and refinement, it remains to be seen how successful this attempt will be. It's an exciting direction for Chevrolet and one that suggests a broader perspective on what an SUV can offer.
