2017 Chevrolet Sonic: Evolving the Compact Segment with Sportiness and Tech
In the pursuit of innovative compact cars, Chevrolet unveiled the 2017 Sonic in both sedan and hatchback forms. The automaker has enhanced the Sonic with a sportier design, advanced infotainment system, and revamped exterior styling featuring LED signature lighting, making a notable statement in the segment.
Exterior Makeover
The Sonic's makeover reflects Chevrolet's global design cues seen in models like the Cruze, Bolt EV, and the 2017 Trax. The updated exterior design features a fresh hood, revamped front fascia, and new lighting elements, along with standard projector-beam headlamps and optional LED daytime running lamps. The Sonic's unique wheels-at-the-corners stance remains, but with a sportier edge.
Chevrolet has also introduced new exterior color choices and wheel designs for the Sonic. The 2017 model will be available in vibrant hues such as Orange Burst Metallic, Brimstone, Cajun Red Tintcoat, and Arctic Blue Metallic (the last available later in the year). Moreover, customers can select from new 15-, 16-, and 17-inch wheel designs.
Interior and Technological Upgrades
Inside, the 2017 Sonic continues to emphasize comfort, convenience, and technological prowess. The car features an updated gauge cluster, now incorporating an analog speedometer for a more refined look. It's also the first in its segment to offer a power driver's seat, an appealing addition for drivers seeking an extra touch of luxury.
Keyless entry and ignition, as well as optional heated cloth seats and a new heated steering wheel, further augment the Sonic's appeal. The RS trim is available with exclusive features such as RS-logo floor mats, piano black décor, an RS-badged flat-bottom steering wheel, and vibrant red cloth seating.
In the realm of technology, Chevrolet introduces a 7-inch-diagonal infotainment system designed to support the latest connectivity platforms, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Sonic also offers a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing up to seven devices to connect to high-speed wireless Internet.
Safety Features
The 2017 Sonic offers a host of safety features, designed to provide peace of mind to drivers and passengers. It's equipped with 10 standard airbags, Stabilitrak electronic stability control, an antilock braking system, and new additions like the Rear Park Assist and a standard rearview camera on all models. Available active safety features such as Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning are also part of the package, further enhancing the Sonic's safety credentials.
Performance and Efficiency
Under the hood, the 2017 Sonic houses the standard Ecotec 1.8L engine, expected to deliver similar fuel economy numbers to its predecessors, though official EPA estimates are not yet available. For those seeking more spirited driving dynamics, an optional Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine is available, delivering an estimated 138 horsepower (102 kW), paired with either a six-speed automatic or manual transmission.
Set to go on sale in the fall of 2017, the Sonic Sedan will be offered in LS, LT, and Premier trims, while the Hatchback version will return exclusively in RS guise, available in LT and Premier trims. This marks Chevrolet's continued investment in the compact segment, attracting new and younger buyers with a blend of sportiness, technology, and safety at an affordable price.
