A Closer Look at the 2016 Chevrolet Spark

With its comprehensive redesign, Chevrolet unveiled a notably more sophisticated version of its globally recognized minicar, the 2016 Spark, to automotive enthusiasts and prospective buyers alike. It promises enhanced efficiency, refinement, and an array of both safety and connectivity features to its users.

A Global Contender

As one of Chevrolet’s most internationally sought-after vehicles, the 2016 Spark expands its footprint to over 40 markets worldwide. Alan Batey, president of GM North America and Global Chevrolet, paints a picture of the brand's burgeoning influence in the mini- and small car segment, underlining the Spark's appeal to those prioritizing efficiency, connectivity, and refinement.

Sleek and Sophisticated

The 2016 model introduces a sharper aesthetic, achieved through a slightly extended wheelbase and a reduction in overall height by about 1.6 inches (40 mm). This sleeker profile also has functional benefits, minimizing aerodynamic drag to enhance efficiency, while interior design tweaks ensure no compromise on the headroom the Spark is known for.

New Architecture and Enhanced Driving Experience

With a robust, fresh architectural design forming the backbone of the 2016 Spark, this redesign paves the way for an elevated driving experience. The strength of the body structure has provided engineers with the latitude to fine-tune ride and handling, resulting in improved control, refinement, and a quieter ride.

Significant Feature Enhancements

Noteworthy features of the new model include an all-new Ecotec 1.4L I-4 engine, available manual and continuously variable (CVT) transmissions estimated to deliver 40 mpg on the highway, and an assortment of new safety features. Also introduced is the next-generation Chevrolet MyLink with a 7-inch-diagonal color touch screen, an advanced dot-matrix LCD instrument cluster display, and a comprehensive assortment of accessory packages for personalized customization.

Design Details

A distinguishing feature of the 2016 Spark is its contemporary design, characterized by sleeker proportions and aesthetics. The lower roof height eschews the typical upright look of most minicars, while its "shrink-wrapped" body conveys a sense of solidity. Notable exterior elements include Chevrolet's signature dual-port grille flanked by sweeping, large, elliptical headlamps, which add to the car's more sophisticated appeal.

Innovative Engine Design

The heart of the 2016 Spark is an all-new 1.4L engine, which is part of GM's new global family of Ecotec small-displacement engines. With an estimated 98 horsepower (73 kW) output, it represents a 16-percent boost over the previous model. Moreover, the new Ecotec engine family illustrates GM's commitment to delivering robust performance with exceptional efficiency.

Focus on Safety

Emphasizing safety, the 2016 Chevrolet Spark builds upon its predecessor's reputation. The strengthened body structure is enhanced by a range of passive and active safety features, including ten standard air bags and a rollover sensing and protection system. New active safety features include Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Spot Alert, and a standard rear-vision camera system.
