Revitalizing a Classic: The 2015 Chevrolet 1967 Chevy Nova 2.0 Concept
In an intriguing blend of yesterday's allure and today's technological prowess, Chevrolet breathes new life into a timeless classic with the unveiling of the 1967 Chevy Nova 2.0 concept in 2015. This vehicle, more than just a homage, encapsulates the progressive evolution of high-performance crate-engine technology, all while preserving the immortal essence of its original design.
The Power Under the Hood
Opting for a paradigm shift from traditional V-8 conversions, the Chevrolet Performance engineers have equipped the concept vehicle with the "LTG" direct-injected 2.0L turbo crate engine. This compact powerhouse is rated at 272 horsepower, aligning its strength to the 275-hp 327 cubic inch (5.3L) V-8 that the 1967 Nova SS boasted and surpassing the 195-hp 283 cubic inch (4.6L) V-8 offered in the Chevy II Nova lineup.
The Weight Distribution and Speed
By integrating an all-aluminum turbo-four in lieu of the all-iron V-8, the concept car retains the original Nova SS's reputation for an impressive power-to-weight ratio. Tipping the scales at an estimated 3,100 pounds, roughly the same as the original, the new Nova 2.0 flaunts an improved 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution. This, coupled with a contemporary six-speed manual replacing the original four-speed transmission, ensures the car's enhanced performance capabilities.
The Nova 2.0 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 6.2 seconds, underlining the agility facilitated by its modern, lightweight powertrain. Further underlining its accessibility, the LTG crate engine, the electronic control unit, the engine accessory-drive system, and even the six-speed manual transmission are all available from Chevrolet Performance, along with the requisite installation kit.
The Exterior Elegance and Inner Workings
Garbed in Black Gold paint, the Nova 2.0 is an exquisite fusion of classic appeal and modern hot-rodding features. The car showcases a billet aluminum grille, tastefully narrowed and tucked bumpers, and door handles that have been replaced with electronic latch releases for a sleek, streamlined look.
Beneath the surface, there's an equal amount of contemporary ingenuity. Custom 17-inch Z/28-style wheels in a satin bronze finish enhance the overall aesthetic, while height-adjustable air bags at the front and rear, along with a triangulated 4-link design in the rear, ensure updated suspension capabilities. Moreover, the inclusion of four-wheel disc brakes rounds off the car's upgraded performance characteristics.
The Chevrolet Debut at SEMA Show
Having initially premiered on the HOT ROD Power Tour earlier in the year, the turbocharged Nova 2.0 shared the spotlight with over 20 Chevrolet concepts and production vehicles at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, a testament to Chevrolet's dedication to innovation while still respecting and celebrating its storied heritage.
