Unveiling the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible: An Exercise in Power, Performance and Prestige

At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Chevrolet took the automotive world by storm, unveiling the 2014 Corvette Stingray convertible. This model is a showcase of modern technology, style and, not least, an innovative electronic top, operable remotely via the car's key fob or while the vehicle is in motion at speeds of up to 30 mph.

The Stingray Convertible: A Nod to Corvette's Heritage

Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design, asserts that convertibles have always been integral to the Corvette DNA. The 2014 Stingray, a product of simultaneous development alongside the coupe version, seems to carry this tradition forward without compromising performance, technology, or design. Welburn’s vision for the convertible stays true to the Corvette spirit while embracing modern advances in automotive technology.

The Global Reach of Corvette Stingray

As we witnessed with the coupe, the Stingray convertible aims to make its mark on global markets, extending its availability to Europe, the United Kingdom, the Middle East, Japan, and Russia by the end of 2013. While the core elements remain consistent, slight adjustments have been made to adhere to each market's specific regulations, like alterations in lighting, headlamp washers, and outside mirrors.

Performance and Technology

The new Stingray convertible carries over all the performance tech from the coupe. The design innovations accommodate the folding top and safety belt mount alterations without any structural reinforcement needed. An all-new aluminum frame, which boasts 57-percent greater rigidity and weighs 99 pounds lighter than its steel predecessor, forms the backbone of this model.

Powering the convertible is the new LT1 6.2L V-8 engine, expected to deliver an estimated 450-hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. The power-to-weight ratio of the convertible aligns nearly identically with its coupe sibling, thanks to its lightweight, rigid structure.

The new LT1 engine harnesses advanced technologies such as direct injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing to facilitate an advanced combustion system. These innovations are aimed at striking the right balance between power and efficiency.

Comfort and Aesthetics

The 2014 Corvette Stingray convertible offers a refined experience with the top up. A three-layer fabric top and sound-absorbing padding paired with a glass rear window ensure a quiet and stylish cabin. Once the top is lowered, the distinctive profile of the Corvette Stingray is further emphasized, highlighted by dual black accent panels and a 'waterfall' design that flows the exterior color into the interior.

Additional Features

The Corvette Stingray convertible isn't just a pretty face. It comes packed with additional features, from an exterior sculpted with advanced lighting and aerodynamics, an interior boasting genuine carbon fiber, aluminum trim, and dual eight-inch configurable driver/infotainment screens, to a selection of driver technologies, including a five-position Drive Mode Selector. Plus, lightweight materials are used throughout the car, contributing to an optimal 50/50 weight balance.

And for those who yearn for the race track, the Stingray doesn’t disappoint with the availability of a track-capable Z51 Performance Package. This package provides an electronic limited-slip differential, integral brake, differential and transmission cooling, and a unique aerodynamics package for enhanced high-speed stability.

Final Thoughts

The 2014 Corvette Stingray convertible is more than just a beautiful car. It's a statement of Chevrolet's ongoing commitment to power, performance, and prestige. From its innovative design and engineering to the variety of high-end features it offers, the Stingray convertible is set to offer a thrilling and connected driving experience, whether with the top down or up.
