The newest addition to the BMW 5 Series, the all-electric BMW i5, has been introduced, showcasing its dynamic and innovative features that signify the brand's commitment to sustainable premium mobility. The i5 is a part of the eighth-generation BMW 5 Series, known for combining cutting-edge technology with sporty, elegant design, and the high level of performance and comfort that are characteristic of BMW vehicles.
Global Launch and Pricing
The global launch of the new BMW 5 Series, including the electric i5, will commence in October 2023. The 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 model is slated to start at $66,800 plus a $995 destination and handling fee. The performance model, the i5 M60 xDrive, will have a starting price of $84,100 plus the same destination and handling fee.
Revolutionary Interior Design and Features
Complementing the innovative drive of the i5 are its state-of-the-art interior features that redefine comfort and functionality. The fully digital BMW Curved Display is the centerpiece of the interior redesign, fostering a modern aesthetic with a sporty flair. Also incorporated are a BMW Interaction Bar with ambient lighting, My Modes for customizable driving and interior experience, and a new gear selector switch on the center console control panel. Furthermore, the i5 offers a fully leather-free interior, with seats covered in perforated Veganza material.
Electric Drive and Charging Technology
The BMW i5 stands out with its impressively high power density and efficiency electric motors, developed in-house. There will be two model variants available at market launch: the i5 eDrive40 and the i5 M60 xDrive. The eDrive40 features a rear axle electric motor that generates a maximum power output of 335 hp (or 317 lb-ft when the Sport Boost or Launch Control function is activated) and is able to sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Meanwhile, the M60 xDrive model comes with a 590 hp electric drivetrain and an all-wheel-drive system, capable of a 0-60 mph acceleration in just 3.7 seconds.
Chassis Technology and Suspension
The i5 M60 xDrive, being the top model, comes with standard suspension equipment for superior performance. It includes electronically controlled dampers, Integral Active Steering, and lowers the ride height by 0.3 inches compared to the i5 eDrive40. Meanwhile, both i5 models feature stroke-dependent control of the dampers on both axles and are equipped with rear-axle air suspension. These features enhance both the sporty and confident handling of the vehicles.
Battery Range and Charging
The i5 will be equipped with a high-voltage battery with a gross energy content of 110.3 kWh. This ensures an impressive electric range for both models. The eDrive40 model is projected to have a range of 300 miles on a single charge, while the performance-oriented M60 xDrive model will offer a slightly lesser range due to the extra power demand, although official EPA ratings are still to be confirmed.
For charging convenience, the BMW i5 will support a maximum charging capacity of 200 kW. Using a DC fast-charging station, it will be possible to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. A home charging station, or Wallbox, will be offered as standard equipment with the i5, capable of providing an 11 kW charging rate, allowing for a full recharge overnight.
Driving Assistance Systems
BMW's i5 will feature an array of driver-assistance technologies. The vehicle comes with the latest generation of the BMW Head-Up Display, Parking Assistant Plus, and Driving Assistant Professional as standard. Other optional features include BMW's Remote 3D View and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. The Active Cruise Control system now has an extended range and can detect stationary vehicles at a higher speed. Also, the emergency lane guidance feature has been expanded.
Environmental Impact and Sustainability
BMW is committed to creating sustainable and environmentally-friendly mobility solutions. The i5 is a testament to this commitment, being an all-electric model with zero emissions. It also offers the option for a fully leather-free interior with high-quality synthetic materials used in seat coverings. Additionally, BMW plans to ensure the responsible sourcing of raw materials for battery production and intends to reuse and recycle batteries whenever possible.
Comparison with Gas-powered 5-Series Models
In contrast to the new electric i5 models, the 530i and 530i xDrive models run on a new generation 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, producing 255 hp and enabling a 0-60 mph sprint in 5.9 seconds and 5.8 seconds, respectively. The 540i xDrive, powered by an inline 6-cylinder engine, produces a maximum output of 375 hp and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. While these gas-powered models retain their dynamic performance, the all-electric i5 models offer the added benefits of zero-emissions and a distinct driving experience imbued with BMW's latest eDrive technology.
Comparison with the 5-Series Plug-In Hybrid
The 5-Series lineup also includes a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the 530e, which combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor. While the 530e is an excellent vehicle that provides a balance between traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) performance and electrification, it has some key differences compared to the all-electric i5.
- Power: The 530e delivers a combined output of 288 horsepower from its gas and electric power sources, less than the 335 horsepower of the i5 eDrive40 and significantly lower than the 516 horsepower of the i5 M60. This is reflected in performance as well, with the i5 offering a more responsive and exhilarating driving experience.
- Charging: The charging capacity of the 530e is also lower, and it takes longer to fully charge the battery even though it's smaller. The i5, with its 200 kW maximum charging capacity, can be charged much faster.
- Sustainability: While the 530e does offer reduced emissions compared to a purely gasoline-powered car, the i5 is a zero-emissions vehicle, aligning more closely with the trend towards sustainability and the reduction of greenhouse gases.
- Price: It's also worth considering the price difference. The i5, with its advanced electric powertrain and larger battery, is expected to cost more than the 530e, although this could be offset over time by lower running costs and potential EV incentives.
