The 2024 BMW 5 Series Plug-in-Hybrid: A Sustainable Powerhouse
BMW, a brand synonymous with luxury and performance, continues its foray into the realm of electrification with the 2024 BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid models. This comes hot on the heels of the European launch of its all-electric BMW i5 and combustion engine variants equipped exclusively with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. The latest addition to its iconic 5-Series, now in its eighth generation, is set to further solidify BMW's standing in the field of electrified drive technology.
An Electrifying Evolution
The plug-in hybrid models of the new 2024 BMW 5 Series Sedan are characterized by extremely spontaneous power delivery, increased efficiency, and significantly extended electric range. With two versions - the BMW 530e Sedan and the more powerful BMW 550e xDrive Sedan - both vehicles feature the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems. This advanced tech is paired with a four-cylinder petrol engine in the BMW 530e Sedan and an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine from BMW Group's latest Efficient Dynamics modular generation in the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan.
Power and Performance
The electric motor, specifically developed for these hybrid models, is integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission along with its power electronics. This highly efficient unit contributes up to 197 hp for the BMW 550e Sedan and up to 184 hp for the BMW 530e Sedan. The system output reaches up to a staggering 489 hp in the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan and up to 299 hp in the new BMW 530e Sedan.
The new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan, with the aid of BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, propels from zero to 62 miles in a swift 4.3 seconds. It also boasts an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph and can achieve up to 87 mph in purely electric mode. The new BMW 530e Sedan, on the other hand, accelerates from zero to 62 miles in a respectable 6.3 seconds and has a top speed of 143 mph.
Increased Range and Aerodynamics
The electric range sees notable improvement in these models, with the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan offering between 49-56 miles and the BMW 530e Sedan boasting a slightly higher range of between 54-62 miles. This extended range is not only due to the innovative technology within but also their aerodynamic design, which includes special panelling and air deflection elements for optimized underbody structure that minimizes air resistance.
Innovative Features and Functionality
Both the BMW 530e Sedan and the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan come with an extensive range of standard equipment including BMW IconicSounds Electric, developed in cooperation with renowned film music composer Hans Zimmer. The BMW Interaction Bar introduces modern functionality and fascinating design as part of the ambient lighting equipment, extending across the entire width of the instrument panel far into the door panels.
The BMW 550e xDrive Sedan further enhances driving experience with Adaptive Chassis Professional which includes electronically controlled shock absorbers, lowered suspension, and Integral Active Steering.
A New Benchmark in Luxury Hybrids?
With its latest plug-in hybrid offerings, BMW is making clear strides towards combining sustainability with luxury and performance. The new generation 2024 BMW 5 Series hybrids are a testament to this, offering notable efficiency and power in a sleek and luxurious package. However, it remains to be seen if these European specs will hold true for the U.S. variant when it makes its premiere stateside.
