Analyzing the Acura NSX Type S 2022: A Farewell Tribute to the Gen 2 NSX Legacy
The 2022 Acura NSX Type S, unveiled during Monterey Car Week, exhibits a commendable departure from its predecessor. Designed as a celebratory nod to the end of the Gen 2 NSX production run, the Type S is an embodiment of Acura's refined performance ethos. It flaunts enhanced aerodynamics, a powerful drivetrain, and distinctive styling that sets it apart as the quickest and most potent NSX to date.
A Limited Edition Farewell
The NSX Type S serves as a fitting finale to the Gen 2 NSX series. This final wave comprises only 350 units, making it a coveted model for Acura enthusiasts. Three hundred of these models are reserved for U.S. customers, marking a noteworthy first - the NSX Type S's maiden sale outside Japan. This limited-edition variant underscores Acura's aspirations in the realm of Precision Crafted Performance, culminating the brand's performance-driven evolution.
A Statement of Power and Style
The Type S emerges as a distinctive model in the Acura NSX lineup. With its aggressive front and rear styling, unique 5-spoke wheels, and the standard carbon fiber roof, the NSX Type S commands attention on the road. Its robust, 600-horsepower drivetrain - a twin-turbocharged V6 and three-motor hybrid system - makes it the most potent NSX in production, promising an enthralling driving experience.
Upgraded Performance Features
The Type S stands out for its reworked 9-speed DCT and torque-vectoring Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), meticulously tuned for maximum performance. An optional Lightweight Package offers further enhancements like Carbon Ceramic Brakes, Carbon Fiber Engine Cover, and a Carbon Fiber interior package, effectively shedding nearly 58 lbs of the car's weight.
Pricing and Highlights
The MSRP for the NSX Type S starts at $169,500, while the version with the Lightweight Package comes with a slightly higher price tag of $182,500. Among its notable attributes are the 600 hp and 492 lb.-ft. of torque it produces, a 2-second faster lap time at Suzuka Circuit in Japan than the 2021 NSX, and powertrain upgrades that include NSX GT3 Evo race car's turbochargers and a 10% higher battery output. Plus, its retuned 9-speed DCT allows 50 percent faster upshift response.
Interior and Exterior Enhancements
The NSX Type S showcases subtle enhancements that exude both sophistication and sportiness. The Alcantara headliner, embossed NSX logo on the headrests, and embroidered Type S logo on the glove compartment add a touch of elegance to the cockpit. Meanwhile, the exterior sees the addition of a carbon fiber NSX GT3-inspired rear diffuser, new Pirelli P-Zero tires, and the option of a sinister Gotham Gray matte paint, available only on 70 out of the 350 units globally.
Race-Inspired Design and Aerodynamics
The NSX Type S displays a dynamic and assertive aesthetic, firmly grounded in the fundamental principles of Total Airflow Management, a philosophy that has guided NSX design since its inception. The car's newly shaped nose, marked by larger and more angular air intakes, works in conjunction with the larger rear diffuser to improve high-speed stability. The front spoiler, made of carbon fiber, minimizes aerodynamic lift at the front by directing airflow underneath the car.
The enhanced engine cooling mechanism benefits from a larger front grille opening, allowing for increased air intake. The vehicle's design incorporates four additional openings - two on each side - that guide air to a sub-radiator located behind each corner of the front bumper. The outermost air intakes also serve to channel air through to the car's sides, creating an air-curtain that reduces wake along the car's side and enhances airflow to the intercoolers' side-mounted air intakes.
The rear of the NSX Type S sports a larger carbon fiber diffuser, inspired by the NSX GT3 Evo race car. The design allows for quick air flow through the center section, generating downforce. Additional fins help prevent wake effects from the tires when cornering, ensuring consistent downforce during crucial cornering maneuvers. The unique diffuser shape also moves the negative pressure peak position towards the rear, creating a balanced downforce effect.
Exclusive Design Details
The NSX Type S features genuine materials throughout, with carbon fiber used for its front lower spoiler, side sills, rear deck-lid spoiler, and the new diffuser. The standard carbon fiber roof not only enhances the car's aesthetics but also reduces the supercar's center of gravity by minimizing weight higher in the car. A noticeable upgrade from the previous resin, the mesh in each of the front air intakes is now made of steel.
Standard design elements include Gloss Berlina Black exterior mirrors, door handles, a dark exhaust finisher, and for the first time, Acura badges on both ends. Dark-tinted headlight and taillight lenses, a distinctive red engine cover, and “Type S” decals on the rear quarter panels further contribute to the aggressive appearance. Each NSX Type S also features a special numbered plaque mounted on the engine cowling.
For an even more customized appearance and improved performance, buyers can opt for the Lightweight Package. This package includes a high-gloss carbon fiber engine cover, carbon ceramic brakes, and carbon fiber accents on the steering wheel and meter hood, reducing the vehicle's curb weight by 57.8 pounds (26.2 kg).
New Gotham Gray Finish
The 2022 NSX Type S, available in 10 different colors, is the first Acura product in North America to offer an exclusive matte paint finish. The Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio uses a five-layer process to paint individual panels before assembly, allowing each panel to cure fully before the next coat is applied.
The distinctive Gotham Gray color is achieved by applying a clear matte metallic finish as the fifth layer, in place of the glossy clearcoat typically used. This special edition will be limited to just 70 of the 350 NSX Type S models that will be produced.
This unique matte metallic finish requires novel handling and shipping methods at the PMC to ensure its protection during transit. This includes applying a new protective film to the car and using a thicker, softer body cover for transport. Special training will also be provided to Acura dealers, who will guide owners on maintaining the finish.
Interior: Driver-Centric Design
Inside, the NSX Type S boasts a cabin that is distinctly driver-centric, with a cockpit designed to enhance connection between the driver and the vehicle. The seats are designed to provide not only comfort and support during everyday use, but also to keep occupants secure during more spirited driving. The use of Alcantara in the seating and steering wheel adds a touch of sporty elegance, while also improving grip and control.
The Acura NSX Type S includes an upgraded ELS Studio premium audio system with nine speakers for an immersive audio experience. The system provides vibrant, studio-quality sound that fills the cabin, whether you're listening to music, taking a hands-free call, or using the built-in satellite navigation system.
The NSX's signature frameless rearview mirror provides a clear, unobstructed view of what's behind, further contributing to the driver-centric ethos of the car. An easy-to-read digital gauge cluster provides essential information at a glance, and a central touchscreen infotainment system offers an intuitive interface for managing a range of features and functions.
Maintaining the Gotham Gray Matte Finish
Maintaining the Gotham Gray Matte Finish of the NSX Type S requires particular care. Acura recommends owners avoid automatic car washes as they can be too abrasive. Instead, hand washing with a soft mitt using mild, pH-balanced, non-detergent car wash soap is suggested. After rinsing the car thoroughly, a microfiber drying towel should be used to prevent water spots.
It's also important to avoid using wax or detail sprays, as they can fill in the microscopic valleys in the matte finish and create an undesirable shine. For the same reason, traditional clay bars should also be avoided because they can leave residue behind. Instead, specialized products designed for matte finishes should be used for cleaning and protection.
