Decoding the 2014 Acura MDX Prototype: A Balance Between Performance and Luxury

When the 2014 Acura MDX Prototype was unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, the anticipation was palpable. A beacon of the future direction for the third generation of Acura's popular performance luxury SUV, the MDX prototype heralds a blend of all-wheel and front-wheel-drive configurations aiming for launch by mid-2013. The Acura MDX, known for its performance luxury and 7-passenger configuration, seems to embrace a new era.

Embodying 'Aero Sculpture'

The 2014 MDX Prototype's stylistic blueprint subscribes to the ethos of "Aero Sculpture." Low, wide, sleek, and devoid of unnecessary clutter, the SUV exudes an air of compact yet premium appeal. Its streamlined design is adorned by the signature Acura Jewel Eye™ LED headlights. Further accentuating its aerodynamic potential, the MDX Prototype displays a whopping 16 percent gain in aerodynamic efficiency compared to its predecessor, the 2013 MDX. This leap has been attributed to extensive testing in Honda R&D Americas' new wind-tunnel laboratory in Raymond, Ohio.

Enhanced Space and Versatility

One glance at the 2014 MDX Prototype, and you'd notice the arcing roofline - now 1.5 inches lower than the outgoing model. This sleek exterior cleverly conceals an even more spacious and versatile interior. A longer wheelbase not only augments ride quality but also gifts the second-row passengers more legroom while making third-row seat access more convenient. Acura Design Studio's chief designer Jon Ikeda promises a luxurious, comfortable, and quieter cabin that still maintains excellent functionality.

Riding into the Future

Responding to consumers' demand in warmer climates, Acura plans to introduce a front-wheel-drive MDX variant, a first in the model's history. This is alongside the all-wheel drive (SH-AWD) model, revered for its dynamic handling and all-weather performance. The 2014 MDX will feature an all-new, stiffer and lightweight chassis, and new front and rear suspension designs that aim to deliver a refined, confident, and sportier driving character. Coupled with a new, direct-injected 3.5-liter i-VTEC SOHC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), Acura promises a balance between spirited performance and improved fuel efficiency. Furthermore, attention to cabin quietness is expected to take a leap with the use of new sound-deadening techniques and the revamped chassis and body design.

Forward in Safety

The 2014 MDX Prototype comes loaded with a plethora of advanced safety technologies, including Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, and available Blind Spot Information (BSI), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), and Active Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow. The aim? To achieve top-level safety ratings. There's also the next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, indicating a commitment to passenger safety.

Connectivity and Convenience

Embracing the era of advanced information technologies, the 2014 MDX will feature the next-generation AcuraLink cloud-based connected car system. With features like Pandora® connectivity, SiriusXM™ radio, SMS text messaging, and cloud-based Aha™ by Harman connectivity, the MDX will seamlessly integrate a myriad of personalized news, information, and media feeds via compatible smartphones and data plans. The premium Acura/ELS® audio system is expected to enhance the driving experience.

A Shift in Production

Interestingly, the production of the all-new 2014 Acura MDX will shift from Alliston, Ontario, to the company's vehicle and V-6 engine manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Alabama. An exclusive North American build, the MDX will utilize both domestic and globally sourced parts.

Concluding Thoughts: A Leap into the Future?

The 2014 Acura MDX Prototype paints a promising picture of the third generation of this popular performance luxury SUV. While the brand's dedication to balancing dynamic performance with fuel economy and luxurious comfort is evident, the true test will lie in the vehicle's performance post-launch. Will the 2014 MDX Prototype live up to the hype and further solidify Acura's standing in the luxury SUV market? Only time will tell.
